The RELS was initiated in 1996 to recruit and encourage
outstanding first-year students attending Thurgood Marshall
College at the University of California San Diego in La Jolla,
California. Recipients have been selected on the basis of four
criteria: high academic achievement, the first in their family
to attend college, a record of community service, and financial
need.
The RELS was begun by two large endowed gifts from
philanthropist/entrepreneur, Sol Price, and the Lytle family.
Since then, the annual RELS Concert has become the major fundraising
event dedicated to increasing the endowment so that it may support deserving students. Awards are
decided by a selection committee of University staff and faculty
and members of the San Diego community.
Beginning in 2004, the REL scholarships are awarded to graduates
of the UCSD Preuss School attending Thurgood Marshall College at
UCSD. RELS Scholars are selected on the basis of the four
criteria above and upon the recommendation of the school's
Director.
Continuance of the RELS award for subsequent years is dependent
on the student maintaining a 3.00 Grade Point Average. Although
choice of major is not a factor, consideration has been given
in the past to young women entering college with an interest
in careers in the public sector.
ABOUT BECKY:
Rebecca E. Lytle's Phi Beta Kappa intellect
was only rivaled by her deep compassion for civic service.
Even after her debilitating illness precipitated her retirement
as an art editor at Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich Publishing Company,
she worked as a volunteer tutor for READ/San Diego, where she
taught reading to adults with learning disabilities.
Becky was married to Cecil Lytle, former Provost of UCSD's
Thurgood Marshall College. At the time of her passing in 1995,
they had raised two strong and loving children: Eric, born in 1966,
graduated from the Haas Business School at UC Berkeley in 1989
and currently works as an Institutional Trust Officer for The
Charles Schwab Trust Company in San Francisco; and Kathleen
"Kelly," shares two lovely boys, Isaiah and Solomon Lytle Hernandez,
with her husband, Sebastian, and is an Assistant Professor of
History at UCLA.
Becky's friends and family have established this scholarship fund
at UCSD to honor her memory.
